Cleveland Barons News Release

CLEVELAND, OH -- The Iowa Stars converted two of five shootout attempts to earn a crucial point in their quest for the West Division's final playoff position. Nolan Schaefer was the "tough luck" loser for the Barons with a 42-save performance. The Stars won their sixth consecutive game and are now tied with Omaha for the final playoff spot within the West Division.

With the good fortune of a fluky bounce of the puck the Barons skated to a 1-0 lead after twenty minutes of play. Glenn Olson was credited with the goal, his first as a professional, after a "dump-and-chase" play by Matt Carkner caromed out of the corner and in front of the Iowa goal. With Stars netminder Mike Smith out of crease, in anticipation of the puck rimming behind the net, Olson slid into the goal along with a Stars defenseman and the puck. The Barons were outshot 15-10 in the period, but received another strong period of goaltending from Nolan Schaefer.

In a carbon copy affair from one night earlier the teams skated into the third period tied 1-1 after Iowa scored the second period's only tally. Loui Eriksson was credited with his team leading 25th goal of the season as a pass from line mate Toby Petersen deflected off Eriksson and into the Barons goal. Junior Lessard also earned an assist on the Iowa goal.

The teams skated through a scoreless third period and overtime session forcing a shootout to settle the score. Eriksson and Lessard converted for Iowa leading the Stars to a 2-1 win over the Barons. Nolan Schaefer suffered his second shootout loss of the year despite handling 42 shots from the Stars during the game. Mike Smith earned the win with a 22-save performance, his fourth consecutive win in net for the Stars.

The Barons wrap up their home ice schedule for the regular season with three games next week, all starting at 7pm. Wednesday night the Grand Rapids Griffins skate into town for the 10th and final meeting of the season against Cleveland. Then on Thursday night the Toronto Marlies hit the ice at National City Rink. Saturday, April 8th the Barons put a close on the home ice portion of their season with a game against the Hamilton Bulldogs. Tickets for Saturday's game can be purchased in advance by phone for just $5.00 (any seat in any level) by calling the Barons office at 216-420-0000.
