Bridgeport Islanders News Release
BRIDGEPORT, CT - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, beat the Providence Bruins 3-2 at home on Wednesday night.
Providence took a 1-0 lead on a power-play goal by Patrice Bergeron, his 17th goal of the season, off assists from Brad Boyes and Keith Aucoin at the 6:11 mark of the first period.
The Sound Tigers answered back 3:42 later as Cole Jarrett knocked in his third goal of the season off assists from John Morlang and Bruno Gervais to tie the score at 1-1. Jarrett swatted a loose puck out of mid-air on a delayed penalty for the equalizer.
With 2:39 left in the first period, Justin Papineau scored his 11th goal of the season to put the Sound Tigers ahead 2-1. Papineau was actually trying to center the puck, but his one-handed feed deflected off of former Sound Tiger Jay Leach and into the net for an unassisted tally.
Jarrett thought he notched his second goal of the game 8:20 into the middle frame, but referee Dave Hansen ruled the puck was put into the net with a distinct kicking motion. However, Morlang officially upped the lead to 3-1 just 47 seconds later with his third goal of the season off an assist from Justin Mapletoft.
The Bruins pulled to within 3-2 when Boyes scored his 27th goal of the season off assists from Colton Orr and Martin Samuelsson at 13:32 of the second period.
Providence pulled goaltender Chris Madden in favor of an extra attacker with 1:19 left in the third period but could not tie the game. Madden finished with 14 saves in a losing effort.
Morlang was the first star of the game with a goal and an assist. Kochan was the second star of the game with 33 saves, including big stops on Kevin Dallman late in the second period and Bergeron early in the third. Papineau was the third star of the game with one goal.
The Sound Tigers were 0 for 2 on the power play and 3 for 4 on the penalty kill. The Bruins had a 35-17 shots on goal advantage.
The Sound Tigers will visit the Hartford Wolf Pack this Friday at 7:05 p.m. and return home to host the Hershey Bears this Saturday at 7:05 p.m. and the Springfield Falcons this Sunday at 4:05 p.m. All three games will be web-cast live at www.soundtigers.com.
