Bridgeport, Conn. - Nathan Lawson extended his unbeaten streak to six games with his first AHL shut-out tonight as the Sound Tigers beat the Lowell Devils, 4-0. Trevor Smith scored twice and Tomas Marcinko and Jeremy Colliton both added a goal for the Sound Tigers. Smith's first goal of the game set off a storm of Teddy Bears, littering the ice. Fans brought stuffed toys to throw onto the ice after the Sound Tigers scored their first tally. The players collected the teddy bears and will deliver them to several local hospitals this week. With the win, the Sound Tigers have reached the 20-win plateau, giving them a 20-8-1-2 record with 43 points and keeping them
Smith opened the scoring with his first goal of the game and 15th of the season, 9:01 into the opening period. Rob Hennigar fed a pass back to Mark Wotton at the point who wristed a shot on net the deflected off of a Devil defenseman. With Lowell starting goalie, Jeff Frazee out of position after the redirection, Smith was standing in the crease to take the puck and lift it over the sprawling net-minder to give the Sound Tigers the 1-0 lead.
Lawson was stellar in the second period, facing seven shots. His toughest save came on a point shot that he screened on. Devils' defenseman Anssi Salmela kept a bouncing puck in the Sound Tigers zone mid-way through the middle frame and snapped a shot on Lawson. Through the screen, Lawson found the puck to make the initial save and then slid to his right to stop Chad Wiseman on the rebound attempt.
The Sound Tigers poured on the offense in the third, with three tallies, two of which coming on the power-play. Colliton scored his second goal of the season when he one-timed a pass from Smith behind the net through the legs of Frazee to give the Sound Tigers the 2-0 lead. Jesse Joensuu also had an assist, his second in as many games. Smith would 16th goal of the season, passing line-mate Mike Iggulden for the team lead, with just under three minutes to play in regulation. Kurtis McLean took a hit along the near boards but was able to slide the puck back to Brett Skinner at the right point. Skinner walked to the middle and fired a slap-shot on goal that Smith deflected through Frazee, giving the Sound Tigers the 3-0 lead. The Sound Tigers would receive their second goal coming on the man-advantage with a minute remaining when Marcinko slammed in his third marker of the year. Pascal Morency skated the puck behind the net and fed a pass to Marcinko cutting in front where he snapped the puck past Frazee to give the Sound Tigers the 4-0 win. Micheal Haley had the second assist on the goal.
The Sound Tigers were 2-for-8 on the power-play and were perfect on the penalty-kill, going 7-for-7. Frazee finished the game with 27 saves on 31 shots while Lawson stopped all 18 Devil shots he faced.
Tomorrow, the Sound Tigers will begin their Teddy Bear runs. Several players will visit Stamford Hospital at 1 p.m. and then stop by the Stamford Children's Center around 1:45. Immediately following, the players will travel to Norwalk Hospital to drop off more teddy bears to children. On Tuesday, the team will visit St. Vincent's Hospital in Bridgeport at 1 p.m. and then stop by Bridgeport Hospital at 1:45. The final stop on their visits is the Ronald McDonald House in New Haven at 3 p.m.
