GREENSBORO, N.C. -- After trailing the entire game, the Grasshoppers rallied for all three of their runs in the bottom of the eighth for a dramatic come-from-behind win, 3-2, over the Charleston RiverDogs on a Novant Family Funday Sunday at First National Bank Field. The getaway-day game flew by, in just one hour, 54 minutes, as Greensboro secured a series win over Charleston, 3-games-to-1.
Down 2-0 since the first inning, the Grasshoppers opened the bottom of the eighth with four consecutive singles off RiverDogs reliever Brian Trieglaff. B.J. Lopez, Zach Sullivan, Sam Castro, and Aaron Knapp started the inning off with consistent hitting to put the Grasshoppers on the board, down 2-1. Sullivan scored the tying run when Jose Devers grounded into a double play, and Isael Soto followed with a go-ahead double off the wall in left field for a 3-2 lead.
Tyler Frohwirth took the mound in the top of the ninth and spun a perfect frame, striking out Leonardo Molina to close the game. Travis Neubeck (2-1) earned the win, working around a hit while striking out two in a scoreless eighth inning. Frohwirth notched the save (2) while Charleston's Trieglaff suffered the blown save and loss (1-1.
Greensboro (10-6) fell behind in the top of the first inning when Oswaldo Cabrera singled and moved from first to third on back-to-back wild pitches. Chris Hess then lifted a sacrifice fly to left field for a 1-0 lead. Dalton Blaser was hit by a pitch, and Leonard Molina followed with an RBI-triple.
Hoppers starting pitcher Brady Puckett settled down after the first inning with six scoreless frames to close his afternoon. He finished with 7.0 innings pitched, allowing two runs on six hits with no walks and five strikeouts in a no decision.
RiverDogs starter Garrett Whitlock also took no decision, despite tossing 7.0 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out four.
The Grasshoppers are staying in the Tar Heel State for their next seven games on the road, with a 4-game series at Hickory followed by three game in Asheville. The team returns to Greensboro on Tuesday, May 1, to open a 7-game home stand against Hagerstown and the defending champion Greenville Drive. Tickets are available online at gsohoppers.com.
