Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
CHARLESTON, W.V. - The Asheville Tourists spoiled a solid start from West Virginia starter Ike Schlabach, as Asheville plated all six runs over their final four frames against the Power bullpen, ultimately claiming a 6-5 win on Sunday afternoon at Appalachian Power Park. Casey Golden provided the game-winning hit with an RBI single that scored Brett Boswell, who doubled previously in the inning.
With the game tied at five in the ninth, Blake Cederlind (1-2) entered the game and retired the first two men he faced in order. He then served up a two-out double to Boswell to set the stage for Golden's go-ahead knock. Golden tied the game in the seventh with a two-run homer to right-center off Power newcomer Hunter Stratton. Nate Harris (S, 1) closed out the game for Asheville (4-13) in the bottom of the ninth, stranding the tying run on second base in Deon Stafford by fanning Mason Martin.
Schlabach continued West Virginia's stretch of phenomenal starting pitching. He tossed five innings of one-hit baseball while striking out a season-high five batters. The lefty has not allowed a run to cross the plate in his last seven innings pitched.
The Power (10-7) got off to another hot start offensively, as their first five batters reached safely against Tourists starter Lucas Gilbreath in the first inning. After Chris Sharpe reached on an error, the Power tallied three consecutive singles from Calvin Mitchell, Stafford and Martin before Dylan Busby rocketed a double off the center field wall to score Mitchell and Stafford. Martin would later score on a Kyle Watson single to make it 3-0 West Virginia.
Watson finished the day 1-for-2 with two RBI and a walk, while Busby, Watson and Oneil Cruz, the Power's 5-7 men in the lineup today, combined to go 4-for-8 with five RBI on Sunday.
West Virginia extended their lead to 5-0 going into the sixth before a Cruz error ignited a three-run Asheville inning. Boswell scored off the errant throw from Cruz, while Sean Bouchard and Taylor Snyder would come home on a Matt McLaughlin single later in the game.
The Power continue their eight-game homestand on Monday at 7:05 p.m. with the first game of a four-game series against the Rome Braves. LHP Domingo Robles (1-1, 5.28 ERA) heads to the hill against Rome righty Alan Rangel (0-1 10.80 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 6:45 p.m. on The Jock 1300 and 1340 AM, as well as online at wvpower.com and via the TuneIn Radio App and the MiLB First Pitch App.
Monday is also Family Buck Night, which means fans can enjoy $1.00 general admission seats or $3.00 box seats and $1.00 specials on popcorn, hot dogs and 12-ounce Pepsi products from the concession stands. For tickets and more information, call the Power at 304-344-2287 or visit wvpower.com.
