Stockton Ports News Release
STOCKTON, Calif.- The A's are closer to getting Sonny Gray back in the rotation, and the All-Star pitcher's next stop on his road to recovery is Banner Island Ballpark. The Stockton Ports and Oakland Athletics have confirmed that pitcher Sonny Gray will make a Major League Baseball rehabilitation appearance in Stockton on Saturday, April 22nd for the 7:10pm start.
Gray is expected to be the starting pitcher for the Ports as part of his recovery from a right lat strain that was suffered prior to the beginning of the 2017 season. The start in Stockton will be the next step in Gray's rehab after pitching 2 2/3 innings in an extended spring training game on Monday. Gray has yet to pitch for the A's this year in a regular season game, but started 22 games last season and was named to Major League Baseball's All-Star Team in 2015 while also finishing third in CY Young voting that year.
Gray's scheduled appearance in Stockton also falls on the Ports' 2017 Asparagus Night celebration. Last year, Asparagus Night was recognized by Sports Illustrated as Minor League Baseball's "Best Theme Night of 2016." As part of this big game, the Ports will be wearing special asparagus themed jerseys, which fans will have an opportunity to bid on throughout the night, and with Gray scheduled to be on the mound this year, fans won't want to miss this. In addition to the theme night, a spectacular fireworks show, presented by Food 4 Less and Rancho San Miguel Markets, will cap off the evening with a bang.
