Rally Falls Short, as Quakes Lose to JetHawks on Tuesday

Lancaster, CA - A late-inning rally fell short on Tuesday night in Lancaster, as the Quakes suffered their second straight setback to the JetHawks, 11-9.

Luke Raley had a career-night for Rancho going 4-for-4 with a home run and reaching base five times, but the Quakes pitching staff struggled for a second straight game, as they gave up a season-worst 11 runs to a JetHawks team which has scored a total of 20 runs in the first two games of the series.

Lancaster wasted little time getting to Quakes' starter Mitch White, who battled through a rough second inning, giving up a total of six runs. Only three were earned, as an error opened the door for an even longer inning. White (1-1) recorded just a total of five outs on the night, allowing six runs (three earned) on four hits, while issuing two walks and also hitting two batters.

Trailing 6-0 after just two innings, the Quakes finally got to starter Colin Welmon (2-0) in the third with three runs, pulling to within three, at 6-3.

The JetHawks poured it on though, scoring two in the third and two more in the fourth against Chris Powell, taking a commanding 10-3 lead.

Raley smacked his first homer of the year to lead off the sixth, and with a man aboard, Drew Jackson blasted his first long-ball of the year three batters later, making it 10-6.

Lancaster got their final run off of Wes Helsabeck in the seventh, Yonathan Daza picked up a two-out RBI single, making it 11-6.

The Quakes got two back in the eighth when Erick Mejia and Jackson had back-to-back RBI doubles against JetHawks' reliever Heath Holder, pulling Rancho to within three, at 11-8.

Lancaster closer Salvador Justo came on to open the ninth and gave up a one-out double to Will Smith. An error allowed Smith to score with two outs, making it 11-9. After a two-out walk to Raley, Ariel Sandoval came to the plate, representing the tying run. Justo came up big though, earning his first save of the year by striking out Sandoval to end the game.

In addition to Raley's four hits, Jackson and Mejia each had three hits for the Rancho offense, which out-hit Lancaster 15-12.

Rancho (6-6) looks to end a brief two-game skid on Wednesday night, sending Caleb Ferguson (0-1) to the mound, opposite JetHawks right-hander Peter Lambert (0-2), with first pitch scheduled for 6:35pm.
