Late Miscue Costs Ports in 8-7 Loss in 11

STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stockton Ports had the final out of the game in front of them and saw a win get away on Tuesday night at John Thurman Field. With a runner at third and two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Ports third baseman Mikey White committed an error on a ground ball that allowed the tying run to score for the Modesto Nuts and send the game into extra innings, where ultimately Modesto would prevail 8-7 on a two-out RBI single by Gianfranco Wawoe in the bottom of the 11th.
In what started as a back-and-forth affair, Modesto scored a run in the first on a two-out RBI double by Logan Taylor and stretched the lead to 3-0 on a Taylor two-out, two-run triple in the third off Ports starter Evan Manarino. An error committed earlier in the third inning allowed both third-inning runs to be unearned for Manarino, who allowed three runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out two in four innings of work.
Trailing 3-0, Stockton's bats came to life in the fourth after Nuts starter Pablo Lopez had retired nine of the first 10 to open the ballgame. Eli White doubled and, two batters later, Sean Murphy reached on an infield single. After a groundout advanced the runners to second and third, Chris Iriart reached on an infield RBI single and Trent Gilbert followed with a single to right to bring the Ports to within a run at 3-2. Mikey White followed with a two-out, two-run triple to the left field corner to give Stockton a 4-3 lead.
Lopez went four innings and allowed four runs on six hits while striking out five for Modesto.
Rohn Pierce entered to pitch the fifth and gave up three straight hits to start his outing, a single to Josh Vidales, a double to Eli White and an RBI single to Seth Brown to make it 5-3. Tyler Ramirez added an RBI single later in the frame to stretch the Stockton lead to 6-3.
Modesto got a run back in the bottom of the fifth as Eric Filia welcomed Dustin Hurlbutt into the game with a leadoff homer to right. The Ports countered in the top of the sixth with an RBI single by Vidales to make it a 7-4 contest. It was the last run given up by Pierce, who allowed three runs on seven hits while walking two in two innings of work.
Hurlbutt would work through the seventh inning and, with one on and two out in the seventh, give up an RBI double to Wawoe that brought the Nuts to within a pair at 7-5. Hurlbutt would be in line for the win but relegated to a no-decision as he allowed two runs on four hits in three innings.
Nolan Blackwood entered to try for his third save in as many chances in the ninth inning. Blackwood gave up a single to Filia with one out and then a single to Braden Bishop that put runners at first and second. After a passed ball allowed the runners to advance, Chris Mariscal hit a sac-fly to center to score Filia and make it 7-6. With Bishop at third and two outs, Wawoe hit a two-hopper to the third baseman Mikey White who had the ball bounce off his chest and off to his left, allowing Bishop to score the game-tying run.
Blackwood would suffer his first blown save of the season. He worked two innings and allowed two unearned runs on two hits while striking out one.
Joey Wagman (1-1) entered to pitch the 11th and issued a leadoff walk to Arturo Nieto, whom they pinch-ran for with Austin Grebeck. After a bunt that was popped up and a groundout advanced Grebeck to second with two outs, Wagman issued a walk to Mariscal that brought Wawoe to the plate. Wawoe swung at the first pitch and lined the game-winning single to left as Grebeck crossed home plate with the winning run, giving Modesto its second extra-inning victory of the season.
Wagman suffered the loss for Stockton while Art Warren (1-0) picked up the win after three scoreless innings of work.
The Ports and Nuts play the third game of their four-game set on Wednesday night at John Thurman Field. Left-hander A.J. Puk (0-0, 1.13 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Modesto southpaw Anthony Misiewicz (0-0, 3.12 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. PDT.
