Somerset Pitcher Signed By Atlanta Braves

Bridgewater, NJ - The Five-Time Atlantic League Champion Somerset Patriots have announced that right-handed pitcher Mitch Atkins has had his contract purchased by the Atlanta Braves.

Atkins was 3-2 with a 3.97 ERA and 39 strikeouts in 43.0 innings pitched in seven games started for the Patriots this season.

He will report to the Braves' Double-A team in Mississippi.

Before joining the Patriots this season, Atkins had Major League experience with the Chicago Cubs and Baltimore Orioles during the 2009-2011 seasons, where he appeared in ten games over that time.

In addition to his Major League time, Atkins also has five seasons of Triple-A experience for both organizations, as well as the Washington Nationals.

He spent last season at Syracuse, the Triple-A level for the Nationals, and finished with a 6-9 record, a 4.87 ERA, and 91 strikeouts in 118.1 innings pitched in 28 games.

Coming into this season, Atkins had a minor league career 70-61 record, a 4.44 ERA, and 845 strikeouts in 1,048 innings pitched in 211 games, 185 of them as a starter.

Atkins is the third Somerset Patriots player this season to sign with a Major League organization, joining Mike Wilson (San Diego-AAA) and Erik Arnesen (Oakland- AA).
