Brockton Rox News Release

Brockton, MA (August 10, 2007) -- LHP Rolando Viera continued a strong run of starts by Rox pitchers, allowing just one run in 8.1 innings while striking out 11 to lead the Rox to a 4-1 victory over the Quebec Capitales before 3,187 at Campanelli Stadium in Brockton. The Rox have won three straight games and the starters have allowed just two runs in the last 24.1 innings. CF Matt Maloney had two hits and an RBI for the Rox and has seven hits and four RBI in his last three games. RHP Amad Stephens picked up his fifth save in relief. The Rox win over the Capitales is just their second in seven games against the defending Can-Am League Champions; Brockton has a 31-39 overall record and is 11-13 in the second half.

Viera gave up just one hit in the first two innings and struck out four. In the bottom of the second, the Rox scored twice on unearned runs against Quebec RHP Michel Simard. With two outs, 3B Melvin Falu reached second on a throwing error and scored on Maloney's single to left field. Later in the inning, Maloney stood at third base and SS Andre Alvarado, celebrating his 23rd birthday, stood at first after a hit-and-run single. Alvarado took off running to second and as the throw from the catcher went down to second, Maloney swiped home to give Brockton a 2-0 lead.

The Rox added a run in the third, again unearned, when RF Tony Gonzalez plated 2B Alex Nunez with a two-out single to left. Viera continued to dominate, allowing just a trio of hits through seven innings. In the eighth, Quebec struck for a run on an RBI groundout by CF Benoit Emond but Viera limited the damage, stranding a pair of runners on base.

In the ninth, Viera tried to complete the third straight Rox start. With one out, he gave up back-to-back singles to 1B Eddie Lantigua and DH Pat Scalabrini and departed in favor of Stephens. C Greg Stevens ripped a shot to the right-center field gap, but Lantigua only got to third base on the long drive and the bases stood full with one out. Stephens settled down to strike out LF Ivan Rojas and got RF Scott Martin to groundout to end the game and preserve the Rox 4-1 win.

Saturday night at 7:05 PM, RHP John Kelly (5-2, 2.34 ERA) takes the mound for his 17th start of the season. He faces Quebec RHP Keith Dunn (8-3, 3.96 ERA).
