MIDLAND - The Corpus Christi Hooks earned a much-needed series split with a 5-3 victory over the Midland RockHounds on Friday night in front of 6,050 fans at Security Bank Ballpark.

Corpus Christi (13-14) finished its eight game road trip at .500 (4-4), splitting two series against the teams with the top two records in the Texas League (Frisco and Midland.)

The RockHounds (17-11) lost for just the second time in eight games against the Hooks this season.

Things didn't start as smoothly as Edison Frias (2-0) would have liked. He walked the first three batters he faced in the bottom of the first to load the bases. The damage was limited when Matt Chapman grounded into a 5-3 double play allowing the first run of the game to score. The next batter (Viosergey Rosa) brought in another run on a double to give Midland a 2-0 lead at the end of one.

After that rough frame, Edison's outing was fantastic the rest of the way. He made only one mistake which was to Matt Chapman who hit a solo homer in the sixth. In all, Frias pitched six innings, giving up three hits, three runs (all earned), walking five, and striking out five on his way to getting the win.

The Hooks' offense got going in the third inning. Danry Vasquez singled to right-center to start things off. Mott Hyde followed by hitting his first triple of the season to the right-center field gap, scoring Vasquez and cutting the deficit to 2-1. Alfredo Gonzalez then bounced one to third that Chapman couldn't handle, allowing Hyde to score and tie the game at 2. Two batters later, it was Alex Bregman who hit the first of his two doubles on the night advancing Gonzalez to third. Derek Fisher's sacrifice fly scored Alfredo and gave Corpus Christi a 3-2 lead.

The offense added another one in the fourth inning. James Ramsay drew a leadoff walk from Midland starter Corey Walter. He achieved third base on a single from Jack Mayfield. Vasquez knocked in his fourth RBI of the year and gave the Hooks a 4-2 lead with his ensuing sac fly to center.

Walter (0-1) went just four innings, surrendering four runs (three earned), five hits, issuing one walk, striking out one, and losing his first decision of the season.

Another Bregman double and an infield single by Fisher set the stage for Chase McDonald to bring in a run on a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning to close the scoring for Corpus Christi.

Aaron West ran into almost no trouble in his three innings of work. He earned his third save of the season in three tries allowing just one hit and one walk while fanning four Hounds. He struck out the final two batters he faced to end the game after two baserunners had reached.

The Hooks return home for a nine-game homestand in which they will square off with San Antonio and Frisco. They open their series on Saturday night facing the Missions at 7:05. The first 2,000 fans in attendance will receive a Jose Altuve Bobblehead from Wigington Rumley Dunn & Blair.
