Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - Keegan Yuhl, Joe Musgrove, and Brendan McCurry collaborated on a 5-hit shutout and Evan Gattis drilled a two-run homer as Corpus Christi downed San Antonio 2-0 Saturday at Whataburger Field before 5,586.
The Missions (9-20) have dropped six straight; the Hooks (14-14) are at .500 for the first time since April 27.
Bryan Rodriguez (2-2) faced the minimum through three innings, but was roughed up in the fourth. He issued a one-out walk to Alex Bregman, who achieved scoring position on a wild pitch. Gattis then put a 2-1, 92-mph fastball onto the left-field berm.
Gattis started behind the plate and played seven innings.
Rodriguez went on to work seven as well, allowing just three hits. He walked two and recorded a strikeout.
Yuhl (1-1) qualified for the victory with five shutout frames, over which he scattered single hits in the first, second, and third. Yuhl walked one, struck out three, and 51 of his 73 pitches were strikes.
Musgrove breezed through the sixth before encountering trouble. Mike Olt legged out an infield single and Auston Bousfield stroked a two-out double to right, but the Texas League ERA leader (0.34) rebounded to whiff Nick Schulz. Musgrove struck out four over three innings.
McCurry struck out the side in the ninth for his third save.
The Missions and Hooks reconvene Sunday at 2:05, Corpus Christi's Kyle Smith (0-3) facing Fabio Castillo (2-4). Driscoll Health Plan presents a Mother's Day Celebration at the ballpark with prizes throughout the afternoon. Castro's flowers provides 1,000 red carnations.
It's also H-E-B Kids Day, so all children run the bases postgame.
