Quad City Mallards News Release
MOLINE, Ill. (January 6, 2012) - John Snowden scored the winning power play goal with 46.7 seconds left in overtime and Jeremy Boyer provided a pair of goals as the host Quad City Mallards defeated the Wichita Thunder 5-4 Friday night.
"This was a character-building, come-from-behind win that hopefully propels us to another good month," said Mallards coach and general manager David Bell.
Snowden ended a dramatic evening by burying a one-timer from the left wing circle.
The Thunder, who earned one point for the sudden death loss, forced overtime when Travis Wight pounced on a rebound to tie score at four with 3:09 left in regulation.
The Mallards, who earlier in the game twice trailed by two goals, had grabbed the lead for the first time when Boyer wristed home his second of the night from the top of the right wing circle to snap a 3-3 tie at 7:54 of the third.
The Mallards outscored the Thunder 3-2 in a wild second period. The Thunder was already on top 1-0 before Matt Robinson, who finished the night with two goals and one assist, doubled the lead from the right wing circle at 3:08 of the second. At 5:44 Eric Giosa got the Mallards on the scoreboard by splitting the Wichita defense with a super individual effort and sweeping the puck in as he toppled to the ice. Just over a minute later Robinson's second goal reestablished the Thunder's two goal cushion. However, Boyer cut the margin to 3-2 in a goalmouth scramble at 10:23 and at 14:56 Obi Aduba's drive from the left wing boards knotted the contest at three apiece.
Wichita was on the power play when R.G. Flath tipped in the first goal of what proved to be a roller-coaster evening just less than eight minutes into the game.
The Mallards visit the Missouri Mavericks tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. before returning home to meet the Mavericks Sunday afternoon at 4:05 p.m. The Mallards' first Genesis Family Skate of the season will immediately follow Sunday's game- fans can bring their skates and join the Mallards on the ice.
