San Antonio Missions News Release
SAN ANTONIO - After splitting the first two games of the series, the San Antonio Missions had a chance to clinch the opening series on Saturday night. Duncan Snider, making his Double-A debut, tossed four shutout innings for the Missions. A five-run fifth inning from Tulsa proved to be too much to handle for San Antonio. The offense chipped in with runs in the sixth and eighth innings, but Tulsa clinched the series victory.
Duncan Snider was the starting pitcher for the Missions. The 6'7" right-hander was making his Double-A debut and just his 12th professional appearance. His first pitch of the night was an up and in fastball that his Jonny DeLuca. Snider easily recovered and retired the following three batters.
Tulsa had their first scoring opportunity in the bottom of the third inning. After retiring the first two batters, Snider allowed a single to Jorbit Vivas. Andy Pages followed that up with a double to put two runners in scoring position. However, Brandon Lewis grounded out to end the inning.
River Ryan was the starting pitcher for the Drillers. Formerly a Padres draft pick, Ryan was also making his Double-A debut. In four innings of work, he allowed just one baserunner while striking out two batters.
Snider's night came to an end after four innings as well. Like Ryan, Snider kept Tulsa off the scoreboard. He allowed one walk, three hits and struck out two batters. Jose Quezada took over in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The bottom of the fifth inning proved to be troublesome for the Missions. Without recording an out, Quezada allowed five runs on three hits while walking a batter and hitting another. Lake Bachar finished out the inning and allowed an inherited run to score. Tulsa gained a 5-0 lead heading into the sixth inning.
San Antonio plated their first run of the ballgame in the top of the sixth inning. Facing Kyle Hurt, Daniel Johnson drew a two-out walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. The inning was extended after Connor Hollis reached base on a fielding error from Eddys Leonard. Evan Mendoza capitalized on the opportunity and drove in Johnson with a single to center field. San Antonio cut the lead to 5-1.
The Missions added their second run of the game in the eighth inning. Juan Fernandez started off the frame with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. His double was the first extra-base hit by a Missions player this season. Jorge Ona reached base on a throwing error which allowed Fernandez to score. After Hollis was hit by a pitch, the Missions had two runners on with one out. The Missions failed to add more runs after a strikeout and a ground out. San Antonio trailed 5-2.
