Snappers Get the Brooms Out

May 18, 2008 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Beloit Sky Carp News Release

The Snappers used a three-run bottom of the fifth inning to take care of the Peoria Chiefs for the third straight day, winning by a final of 5-4. David Bromberg notched his second win of the season, going an impressive six innings and allowing only seven hits and three runs (two earned).

Peoria jumped ahead of the defending Midwest League Western Division champs with two runs in the top of the second inning. The Chiefs got their two runs off two hits and one Snapper error. Peoria's Mario Mercedes delivered a two-run single to left field with two outs, putting the Chiefs ahead 2-0 after one and a half.

Beloit notched two runs of their own in the bottom of the second inning to tie the game up at 2-2. Ramon Santana cracked a two-run single through the hole at short, scoring Jair Fernandez and Joe Benson. Santana's two RBIs pulled the Snappers and Chiefs even after two innings.

Beloit broke the game open a bit in the bottom of the fifth inning with three runs. Mark Dolenc got things rolling with a one-out single to left-center and advanced to second on a balk by reliever Todd Blackford. After a Garrett Olson strikeout, the Snappers loaded the bases on back-to-back walks from Chris Parmelee and Jair Fernandez.

Joe Benson then delivered the big hit for the Snaps, blasting a three-run double off the top of the wall in deep center field. Benson's double gave the Snappers a 5-2 lead after five innings.

Peoria would battle back to within one run, with a run in the top of the sixth and another in the top of the eighth. That would be all that they would get, however, as the Snaps held on for the 5-4 victory.

Matt Williams came on in the ninth and pitched a one-two-three inning to pick up his team-high fourth save.

Beloit's Joe Benson picked up another three hits and three RBIs as the Snappers improved to 22-20 on the season. Peoria fell to 14-29.
