
Ninth inning rally comes up short in 6-5 loss to Clinton

The Cedar Rapids Kernels staged a ninth inning rally, but came up a run short in a 6-5 loss to the Clinton LumberKings on Sunday afternoon at Dale and Thomas Popcorn Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
With the bases loaded and trailing 6-3, Jerry Gonzalez laced a single to center field, bring home two runs and making the score 6-5 Clinton. But with Clay Fuller at the plate, pinch runner Ivan Contreras was thrown out trying to steal third base, ending the game and the Kernels rally.
Jay Brossman was 2 for 4 on the day with a double, RBI, two stolen bases and two runs scored. Chris Rosenbaum was 2 for 3 with a walk and run scored and Andrew Romine was 1 for 4 with a triple as the Kernels outhit the LumberKings, 8-7.
Kernels starter Jordan Walden (2-4) allowed three runs on four hits and struck out three to take the loss. Clinton starter Neftai Feliz (4-1) allowed a run on three hits and struck out six over six innings and Chris Dennis allowed two unearned runs over 1.2 innings to save a Clinton win.
The Kernels continue an 11 game home stand on Monday night as the Wisconsin TimberRattlers come to town for four games. Gates open at 5:30 pm on a Mix 96.5 FM/WMT AM 600 Belly Buster Monday - for just $7, plus the cost of a ticket, fans can enjoy all you can eat hamburgers, hot dogs, chips and peanuts all game long. First pitch is set for 6:30 pm.
