Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA (May 18, 2008) - The Burlington Bees fell Sunday afternoon at home against Quad Cities 3-1. The Bees had the winning run on base in the ninth inning but a great play by Quad Cities outfielder Tommy Pham ended the game.
Sam Runion, who was added to the Bees roster right before the game, made the start for the Bees. He pitched well as he allowed two runs, only one of which was earned, in six innings of work. The two runs both came in the fifth inning. After one out was recorded, Luis De La Cruz reached second on an error. A Jose Garcia single and a walk to D'Marcus Ingram loaded the bases for the River Bandits. After a fielder's choice where the out was recorded at home, Pham hit a two-run double to centerfield.
Ben Swaggeerty pitched one inning of no-hit baseball before Zach Peterson came into the game for the Bees. Pham was the first batter that Peterson saw and he hit a solo homerun to leftfield to give Quad Cities a 3-0 lead. Pham had all three RBI in the game for the River Bandits. That was the only run Peterson allowed in two innings of work with three strikeouts.
Cardoza Tucker Jr. came into the ballgame to pitch the bottom of the ninth inning and almost allowed the Bees to tie the game. David Lough led the inning off with a single down the right field line. With one out, Jason Taylor singled, which moved Lough to third. Shawn Hayes then hit a single to score Lough. After Antonio Jimenez came into to pinch-run for Hayes at first, Kyle Martin hit a ball deep to left field that was caught on the run by Pham to end the game.
The Bees had six hits on the day but only Hayes had more than one as he went 2-3 with an RBI and a walk. With Lough's hit in the ninth, he extended his hitting streak to four games, which is a season high.
The Bees will welcome the Kane County Cougars to Burlington for five games in four days. Monday night, Danny Duffy will make his debut for the Bees as he is the scheduled starter. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30. The game can be heard on 1490 KBUR and online at www.GoBees.com.
