Snappers Drop Rubber Match to Bees, 2-0

A lack of timely hitting doomed the Beloit Snappers Thursday night as they fell to the Burlington Bees 2-0.

The Snappers sent runners into scoring position in five consecutive innings but couldn't convert any of them into runs.

Both starting pitchers had impressive outings as Dylan Covey made his second start since returning from the DL (4.2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 7 SO) and Harrison Cooney showcased his league-best ERA (6.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER).

The Snappers finished the game 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position and left 10 men on base in the game.

After four scoreless innings that saw only one hit between the two teams, the Bees began the scoring in the fifth inning as they capitalized off a fielding error to take an early 1-0 lead.

Snapper second baseman Luis Baez failed to field a groundball from Eric Aguilera and Trevor Gretzky hit an RBI-double to send Aguilera home, Burlington's first hit of the ballgame.

In the first of five consecutive innings with runners in scoring position for the Snappers, Phil Pohl was hit by a pitch, Ryan Mathews singled but B.J. Boyd grounded into a double play to end the fifth inning. A line-out from B.A. Vollmuth and a Tyler Marincov strikeout ended the sixth inning and stranded two runners who had drawn walks.

In the seventh inning, Pohl and Boyd drew walks but a pop up from Branden Cogswell ended the frame. In the eighth, Matt Chapman singled and stole second base but a pop out and a strikeout ended the inning.

Beloit had one last chance to take the lead in the bottom of the ninth as Pohl led off the frame with a single to left field and Mathews singled to center field. The Snappers once again failed to convert their baserunners into runs, as Boyd struck out and Cogswell flew out to end the game.

Joe Michaud pitched 4.1 innings in relief (4.1 IP, 3 H, 1 ER) in his debut with the Snappers after being promoted from Vermont earlier this afternoon.

The Snappers travel to Kane County Friday night for the first game of a four-game series against the league-leading Cougars.
