Chiefs Win 5-3 Thursday

PEORIA, IL- Luis Perez had three hits including his first home run to back Chase Brookshire as the Peoria Chiefs beat the Clinton LumberKings 5-3 on Thursday night to end the homestand with a 4-2 record. The Chiefs are 13-7 in the second half and 50-39 overall.

The Chiefs scored a run in the first inning against LumberKings starting pitcher Blake Holovach. Juan Herrera led off with a bloop single to right and stole second. After moving to third on a ground out, Herrera scored when Ronald Castillo singled to right.

Peoria made the score 2-0 in the second on Perez' leadoff home run. It was his first home run this season, having also played at Advanced-A Palm Beach. His last Chiefs home run was a three-run shot on June 14, 2013 as a pinch-hitter. It was his only Chiefs at-bat of the season.

Clinton cut the Chiefs lead in half with a run in the third against starter Chase Brookshire. Lonnie Kauppila singled with one out before Aaron Barbosa's drag-bunt single. After a strikeout, Chantz Mack looped a single to right to score Kauppila and make the score 2-1.

The Chiefs broke through for three runs in the fourth as Castillo led off the inning by reaching on a throwing error by shortstop Jack Reinheimer and Perez singled. Rafael Medina came up with one out and doubled home both runners for a 4-1 Chiefs advantage. With two away Herrera singled to right to score Medina.

Clinton got two runs back in the sixth, including an unearned run charged to Brookshire. Mack began the inning by reaching on an error by second baseman Michael Schulze before Justin Seager struck out as the last batter Brookshire faced. Brandon Lee relieved and gave up an infield single to Marcus Littlewood before a strikeout of Isaiah Yates. Martin Peguero followed with a two-run double to left to make the score 5-3 Chiefs.

Brookshire (3-4) pitched 5 1/3 innings allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits with a walk and three strikeouts to earn the win. Lee got one out before leaving with an injury, giving up one run on two hits and a strikeout. Zach Loraine tossed 2 1/3 perfect innings with three strikeouts. Josh Lucas pitched a scoreless ninth working around two hits and getting two strikeouts to pick up his first save.
