Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release
PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz.- The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees (14-17-3) snapped their five-game losing streak with a 5-3 victory over the Arizona Sundogs (13-15-4) on Wednesday night. The Bees received goals from five different players including the first of the season by Brett Clouthier with only one second remaining the in the first period.
Arizona scored the first goal of the game with a Cam Keith power-play strike at 9:52. Keith was sitting in the slot and Luke Erickson, who controlled the puck along the goal line was able to squeeze the pass through for the one-time goal.
The Killer Bees tied the game at one goal a piece with only a second to play in the period as Brett Clouthier took a feed from Ryan McLeod and backhanded it past Levente Szuper. For Clouthier it was his first goal of the season.
The Killer Bees scored three goals in the second period to end the frame with a 4-1 lead.
Sean Muncy started the Killer Bees onslaught with his 13th goal of the season. Lewicki fed Muncy in front and though Szuper was able to turn away the first few shots Muncy was finally able to force the puck through.
Aaron Lee increased the Bees lead to two with a snipe of the top right corner. Lee came streaking into the zone while the Bees were on the power-play and from the top of the circle wristed a perfectly placed shot past Szuper. McClellan and Gendur picked up the helpers.
Aaron Lewicki, fresh off being named a 2011 CHL All-Star, scored a five-hole goal at 16:31. Lewicki came in on the right side of the ice and took an innocent looking shot on net that fooled Szuper and found the back of the net. Kyle Radke and Jake Obermeyer worked the puck out of their own zone for the assists.
Despite lead 4-1 the Bees were being outshot 29-25 at the end of 40 minutes of play.
The third period would have a bizarre tone as the Bees were able to hold on for the victory. The Sundogs scored just 17 seconds into the frame. Luke Erickson scored the goal with the assist to Cam Keith.
The Bees would respond at 3:20 as Zak McClellan scored his eighth career shorthanded goal, tying the Killer Bees record. Kyle Radke earned the assist.
Arizona would score the final goal of the game at 6:47 as Luke Erikson netted his second of the period.
The third period was marred by a line brawl at 10:28. Sundogs goal Doug Groenestege came down the ice from his own crease and hit a blindsided Juliano Pagliero. For his efforts Groenestege earned an instigator minor, fighting major, and instigator game misconduct. Because of the misconduct Levenvte Szuper had to reenter the game.
The Killer Bees and Sundogs continue their three-game series on Friday night at Tim's Toyota Center. The puck drops at 8:05 p.m. on Real Country 102.1-FM KBUC and CHL-TV.
