Calgary Vipers News Release

A five run sixth inning was the difference as the Calgary Vipers lost 6-2 to the Yuma Scorpions in the second game of a double-header at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta before 2044 fans. After a scoreless first four innings Yuma scored a run in the fifth and five more in the sixth to take the commanding lead. After a offensive explosion in the previous three games the Vipers were held to only four hits in the game while striking out ten times. The Snakes record is now 13-12 in the second half of the season as they remain in second place in the Golden Baseball League's North Division.

In the top of the second inning with a runner on second base and two outs Hamzel Diaz hit a fly ball into left field that Theo Fleury was able to make a basket catch on to avoid the runner from second base scoring. Fleury finished the night going one-for-three in his professional baseball debut.

Yuma got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning with singles from Diaz and Toshinari Ire to put runners at the corners and Diaz scored from third base on a run batted in fielder's choice by Yosvany Almario for the 1-0 advantage.

The Scorpions broke open the game an inning later with a five run inning for a 6-0 lead. Rich Janeway singled, stole second base, and Maikel Jova drove him in with a base hit. After a Hector Bernal single A.J. Valentine laid down a sacrifice bunt that was thrown away by third baseman Travis Drader to allow Jova to score and Valentine to reach second. Pete Farina doubled home a run, Hamzel Diaz singled, and they both scored on a Almario two run double.

Calgary got two runs back in the bottom of the sixth with a Colin Moro walk, Darryl Brinkley RBI double, Mejia groundout to move Brinkley to third, and a Drader sacrifice fly for the 6-2 score.

Phil Sobkow (1-4) received the tough luck loss going five innings and giving up three runs while not walking a batter. Tyler Pearson (2-3) pitched his best game of the season going five and two third innings and giving up two runs while walking only one and striking out eight for the victory.

Sunday August 10th at 1:35 PM (MDT) the four game series and home stand concludes with Evan Greusel (7-2) taking the mound. Also on Sunday Calgarian and Washington Capital Mike Green will throw out the first pitch and sign autographs.
