Calgary Vipers News Release
The Calgary Vipers used a seven run first inning to defeat the Yuma Scorpions 10-1 at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. In the bottom of the fifth inning Theo Fleury appeared in his first professional at-bat and after watching two balls he sent a groundball up the middle and into centerfield for a base hit off of pitcher Evan White. Calgary starter Dallas Mahan (4-2) was excellent in pitching a complete game and giving up only five hits for the one run while not walking a batter and striking out five. With the victory the Vipers have won three straight games and improve to 13-11 on the second half of the season.
Yosvany Almario led off the game with a solo homerun to put the Scorpions ahead 1-0.
The Vipers picked up right where they left off the previous two nights with seven runs in the bottom of the first inning for a 7-1 advantage. Nelson Castro doubled, Colin Moro reached on a fielding error, and Darryl Brinkley knocked in a run with his 2000th professional hit. Felix Jose followed by reaching on a run batted in fielder's choice where Yuma tried to throw out Moro at the plate but he slid in safely. Jorge Mejia then hit a three run long ball for his ninth homerun of the season. Travis Drader walked, Kevin Price doubled, and Patrick Arlis and Moro capped off the inning with RBI singles for the seven run frame.
A run was added in the bottom of the fourth inning as Moro singled and Brinkley doubled him home for the 8-1 lead.
Calgary hit double digits in runs for the third straight game with two runs in the bottom of the sixth for the 10-1 score. Castro singled, Moro doubled him home, Jose walked, and Moro scored on a Mejia RBI fielder's choice.
In Game 2 Fleury will start in left field and Phil Sobkow (1-3) will take to the mound.
Sunday August 10th at 1:35 PM (MDT) the four game series and home stand concludes with Evan Greusel (7-2) taking the mound. Also on Sunday Calgarian and Washington Capital Mike Green will throw out the first pitch and sign autographs.
Tickets can be ordered by calling 277-BALL (2255). All games can be heard live online at www.calgaryvipers.com.
