
Smolinski and Mechanics melt Frostbite

Fraser, MI â Bryan Smolinski scored with 1:10 remaining in the game to give the Motor City Mechanics a 4-3 win over the top ranked Adirondack Frostbite. Adirondack, ranked first in the Eastern Conference and second overall in the UHL, were outshot by the Mechanics 38-17. This was the Mechanics fifth consecutive win.
Motor City opened the scoring at 15:47 of the first period on a goal by rookie Matt Hunter, assisted by Derian Hatcher and Blair Manning. The Frostbite tied the game at one early in the second period on a goal by Jean-Francois Laberre. The Mechanics took a 2-1 lead midway through the second when Chris Gignac found the back of the net, drawing assists from Joe Burton and Jason Reimers.
Heading into the third period with a 2-1 lead, Adirondack fought back when Greg Koehler scored to knot the game at two. Chris Chelios scored short handed to give Motor City a 3-2 lead but 13 seconds later, Bob Rapoza scored a power play goal for the Frostbite to tie the game once again. With just 1:10 remaining in the third period and the game tied at three apiece, Bryan Smolinski scored from the right side off a feed from Jeff Doyle to win the game for the Mechanics.
Hunter picked up a goal and an assist for Motor City, while Koehler and Rapoza each notched a goal and an assist for Adirondack. In goal, Rod Branch made 14 saves for the Mechanics, while Derek Gustafson made 34 saves between the pipes for the Frostbite.
The Mechanics are at home tomorrow night at 7:30pm when they host the Richmond River Dogs. The game will be broadcast live on UPN Detroit. On Sunday, the Mechanics host the Muskegon Fury at 5:00pm. Join Mary Kay and the Mechanics for Pink at the Rink on Sunday! The entire Motor City squad will be sporting pink jerseys. The jerseys will be auctioned off following the game, with the proceeds benefiting the Mary Kay Ash Charitable Foundation for breast cancer research.
