Jacksonville, Fla.- Rick Ankiel was walked with the bases loaded in the eighth inning to drive in the winning run and was the winning pitcher as the Smokies (8-6) closed a five game series in Jacksonville with a 6-3 win over the Suns Thursday night. Ankiel (1-0) walked one batter and hit another but didn't allow a run over 1 2/3 innings to earn his first Southern League win.
Suns reliever Will McCrotty walked Bucky Jacobsen and Scott Krause and hit Jeremy Dodson with a pitch to load the bases for Ankiel as Tennessee took the lead without a hit in the eighth inning. Tennessee added two runs in the ninth inning on singles by Krause and Yadier Molina.
The Smokies continue conclude their first road trip of the season with a four game series at Greenville beginning Friday night. Jeremy Cummings will pitch for the Smokies opposite Bret Evert.
