Smokies Sweep Biscuits in Doubleheader Lose 4-3(7), 10-5(7)

KODAK, Tenn - The Tennessee Smokies (18-12) swept the Biscuits (15-15) in their doubleheader matchups Thursday walking away with 4-3(7) and 10-5(7) wins to maintain control of the series 3-0.

After four scoreless innings, the Smokies finally broke the tie when Andy Weber scored Christopher Morel on an RBI-double to make it 1-0.

The Biscuits finally got their first hit of the day and first after 13 innings in the top of the fifth inning. After their second-consecutive hit from Brett Wisely, Grant Witherspoon was walked to load the bases. Curtis Mead then hit a three-run RBI-double down the left field line that made the score 3-1.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Biscuits gifted the Smokies three runs with a throwing error by Alexander Hill that scored three. The Smokies gained the lead 4-3 and maintained it going into the final seventh inning.

With one more chance for a win in the top of the seventh, the Biscuits immediately dug themselves into a hole with a flyout and strikeout to start. Later Mead and Jordan Qsar found themselves on base with two outs, but Smokies closer Graham Lawson was able to close the game with a flyout to Austin Shenton for the final out.

Game #2 of the double-header served as a makeup for a rain postponement on April 17. As the away team the Smokies started the game on top first with a deep RBI-double by Weber that made it 1-0.

In the bottom of the first, the Biscuits had runners at the corners in Wisely and Mead. Jones stole second to pick up his 15th stolen base of the year as a throwing error allowed Wisely to score and Jones to advance to third. Later, Kameron Misner hit an RBI-double that brought Jones home for the Biscuits to take the lead 2-1.

In the third inning, the Smokies tied it up at two after a line drive RBI-single from Alexander Canario that scored Luis Vazquez. Tennessee took further control when Ball smashed a three-run home run to right, his fourth of the year to put the Smokies on top 5-2. Smokies Levi Jordan scored to make it 6-2 after a wild pitch by Evan McKendry before the Smokies were retired from the inning with a strikeout and groundout.

After two walks by Biscuits relief pitcher Alan Strong, Ball continued to put the Smokies ahead with an RBI-double to make it 9-3. In game two, Ball was a triple short of hitting for the cycle while also acquiring six RBIs. Yonathan Perlaza scored Ball on a line drive RBI-single that put them in double digits 10-3. Nicholas Padilla came in to secure the close and win for the Smokies.

The Biscuits will try to get back in the win column tomorrow when Caleb Sampen (1-1) faces Anderson Espinoza (0-3) at 6:00 PM CT.
