Knoxville Smokies News Release

The Smokies improved to 5-7 in front of 2,306 fans at Smokies Stadium on Monday night. The win over the Biscuits got the Smokies off of a two-game snide and evens up the five-game series at one win a piece.

The Smokies got their offense going in the bottom of the second inning. Biscuits' starter RHP Jake Faria (4.2 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 7 BB, 5 SO) walked C Victor Caratini (0-2, R, 2 BB, 2 SO) and DH Mark Zagunis (1-2, 2 BB, SO) to begin the frame. RF Bijan Rademacher (1-2, 2 R, BB) then reached on a fielder's choice to second to put runners on the corners with one out. After LF Anthony Giansanti (1-4, R, 3 SO) struck out, SS Carlos Penalver (2-3, 3 RBI, BB) sent a double down the third base line driving home Caratini from third and Rademacher all the way from third. Penalver was gunned down at third trying to extend his double into a triple.

The runs continued to come for the Smokies in the fourth inning. With two outs Rademacher and Giansanti reached on back-to-back singles to bring Penalver back to the plate with a runner in scoring position. The 21-year-old delivered yet again for his third RBI on the night and seventh of the season. CF Jacob Hannemann (1-4, BB, SO) was then walked after a wild pitch that drove home Giansanti from third to give the Smokies an early 4-0 advantage.

After walking seven batters and surrendering four earned runs in 4.2 innings of work from Faria, the Biscuits turned to RHP Buddy Borden (1.1 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 2 SO). Borden walked Rademacher to load the bases but got out of the inning by striking out Giansanti.

The Smokies threatened to add to their lead in the sixth inning that was jumpstarted by a single from Hannemann. 2B Chesny Young (1-3, 2 BB)then singled on the next at-bat moving Hannemann to third base after he stole second earlier in the at-bat. With runners in scoring position however 3B Jeimer Candelario (0-4, BB, SO) popped out to the second baseman ant C Taylor Davis (0-4, SO) struck out swinging as the Biscuits escaped the inning.

The Biscuits turned to their third pitcher of the evening in the seventh with LHP Steve Ascher (2.0 IP, H, BB, 2 SO). Zagunis reached on a single with one out that was then followed by Rademacher getting pegged by a pitch inside. Ascher and Montgomery got out of the jam though as Penalver flew out to center field.

RHP Paul Blackburn (7.0 IP, 2 H, 3 BB, 3 SO) was in total control for Tennessee in what was his third start of the year. The 22-year-old threw 86 pitches on 23 batters faced on the night with 47 of his pitches being strikes. Blackburn only faced one situation with a Biscuit in scoring position that came in the top of the sixth frame on his way to his second win of the season.

RHP Corey Black (1.0 IP, BB, SO) replaced Blackburn in the eighth for his fourth relief appearance of the 2016 campaign. After walking the first Biscuit he faced, Black settled in to retire the next three batters he faced including a strike out of LF Granden Goetzman (0-3, SO).

Tennessee turned to RHP Andury Acevedo (1.0 IP, H, 3 SO) to close out the game in the ninth. 2B Tommy Coyle (2-4, 2 H, SO) connected for a single to start the frame and eventually stole second. Acevedo found his groove to close out the ball game however with three straight strikeouts as his fast ball hit the 97 and 98 MPH mark in his inning of work.

The Smokies are expected to turn to RHP Brad Markey (0-0, 1.80 ERA) for Tuesday night's contest while the Biscuits are set to go with RHP Taylor Guerrieri (0-0, 1.80 ERA).
