Power Outshines Pitching in Win over Barons

Jackson Generals News Release

Jackson, Tenn. - A matchup of premiere pitching prospects was overshadowed by offense Monday as the Generals took a 9-3 victory over Birmingham at The Ballpark at Jackson. Jackson hit a pair of home runs in a nine run, 13-hit effort while Edwin Diaz bested former Vanderbilt star Carson Fulmer on the mound.

Right off the bat, it became evident that Monday's contest would not be a pitcher's duel. Adam Engel took Edwin Diaz's second pitch of the game over the left-field fence. All three runs against Diaz this year have come on home runs.

Eddy Alvarez followed with a double, but that was all the damage done against Diaz. Over five innings, the lanky right-hander struck out eight and walked just one. Through 16 innings, he has allowed just three runs while striking out 24 and walking only two opposing hitters.

Jackson (7-4) didn't wait long to answer Birmingham's early run. With two outs in the bottom of the first, Tyler O'Neill crushed his second Double-A home run 430 feet to tie the game.

Carson Fulmer (0-3, 8.53) made his return to the Volunteer State after leading Vanderbilt to a pair of College World Series appearances, but suffered the loss in Jackson. The Generals took the lead in the fourth on an RBI single by Ian Miller. In the fifth, Benji Gonzalez drew a two-out walk and came in on a Tyler O'Neill double. O'Neill finished 2-for-5 with a pair of runs batted in to extend his hitting streak to 10 games.

Birmingham (5-7) cut into Jackson's lead in the sixth on a double by Nicky Delmonico, but the Generals promptly pulled away. D.J. Peterson led off the home half of the frame with his first homer of the year, a blast off the top of the 24-foot high wall in left field to make it 4-2 Jackson.

The Generals blew the game open with five runs on six hits while sending 10 men to the plate in the eighth inning. Dan Paolini, Steve Baron, Pat Brady and Guillermo Heredia all drove in runs to make it 9-2.

Dan Altavilla (S, 2) gave up a run in the ninth, but pitched well over the final two innings to earn his second save of 2016. He joins Kraig Sitton in Jackson's bullpen with multiple saves this season.

For the third time in four games, the Generals had at least 13 hits, five of which went for extra bases Monday. Their .290 average leads the Southern League by a wide margin.

Jackson goes for the series lead in the middle game Tuesday night. A pair of southpaws are set to pitch, with Ryan Yarbrough (0-0, 3.48) going for the Generals against Birmingham's Jordan Guerrero (0-0, 4.00).
