Mobile BayBears News Release
JACKSONVILLE, FL - After opening up their 20th season at Hank Aaron Stadium on Saturday with two losses in a doubleheader against the Biloxi Shuckers, the BayBears hit the road early Sunday morning to open up a five game set with the Jacksonville Suns. The Suns didn't welcome the BayBears warmly as Suns right-hander Jake Esch held the BayBears' bats in check. The Suns ended up taking the series opener by a final score of 4-1 at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
The Suns (6-5) struck first with one run in each of the first two innings against BayBears RHP Zack Godley (1-1). Yefri Perez led off the Suns first inning with a single and advanced to third base on a base hit by center fielder Jeremias Pineda. Suns left fielder Austin Dean pushed Perez across home with a sacrifice fly to give Jacksonville the 1-0 lead.
In the second frame, Suns right fielder Moises Sierra hit a ball back up the middle to reach first. After Godley walked second baseman Peter Mooney, Esch reached first on a bunt single to the third-base side that loaded the bases. Despite the tough situation, Godley limited the Suns to just one run, allowing another sacrifice to Perez that scored Sierra upping the Suns advantage to 2-0.
Godley wouldn't allow another run after the second inning. The Bamberg, South Carolina native hd his day come to an end after allowing just the two runs on six hits while walking two and striking out six in 5.2 innings.
BayBears catcher Michael Perez scored the only run of the game for Mobile (4-6) with a leadoff solo home run to right in the top of the third inning.
Esch (2-1) earned his second victory of the season for the Suns after he limited Mobile to the one run on four hits, walking one and striking out four in six full innings on the mound.
Jacksonville added a run in each the seventh and eighth innings. Dean and Suns third baseman Matt Juengel tallied the runs with RBI singles to give Jacksonville a 4-1 lead. RHP Sean Donatello sat down the final three BayBears batters in the ninth inning to earn his first save of the season.
The BayBears will look to snap their current three-game losing streak tonight as they continue their five game series with Jacksonville at 6:05 p.m. central time. BayBears LHP Anthony Banda (0-1) will toe the rubber opposite Suns starter Jarlin Garcia (0-0).
When Mobile and Jacksonville wrap up their series after Thursday night's game, the BayBears will return home to open up a five game series with the Tennessee Smokies at Hank Aaron Stadium from Friday, April 22 - Tuesday April 26. Fans can purchase tickets to the games during the upcoming series against the Smokies or any of the BayBears remaining 67 home games.
