Smokies Drop Series Finale to Barons

Birmingham, AL - The Tennessee Smokies were defeated 5-2 by the Birmingham Barons on Friday night. Birmingham used a big eighth inning to pull away and hand the Smokies their thirteenth loss in the last fifteen games.

Tennessee jumped out to an early lead in the third inning. After a Charcer Burks walk, Trent Giambrone doubled Burks home to give the Smokies a 1-0 lead. Birmingham tied the game on an RBI-triple in the bottom of the frame and added another run on a single to make it 2-1 Barons. Tennessee tied the game in the top of the seventh inning when Ian Rice hit a solo home run to left field, making it 2-2. It was the sixth home run of the season for Rice. The Smokies loaded the bases later in the inning, but all three runners were stranded.

Thomas Hatch started on the mound for the Smokies. Hatch pitched 5.0 innings, allowing two runs on five hits and three walks. He also struck out seven in the start. Preston Morrison relieved Hatch to start the sixth inning. Morrison threw 1.2 innings and gave up just one hit while striking out one. Morrison was relieved by Wyatt Short, who gave up three runs in the bottom of the eighth to give the Barons a 5-2 lead.

The Smokies will begin a five-game series at home against the Chattanooga Lookouts, beginning at 7 p.m. ET. Michael Rucker is the projected starter for the Smokies as he looks for his eighth win of the season. Rucker is 3-3 this year in home starts with a 3.56 ERA. The Lookouts will counter with Anthony Marzi who is looking for his first win for Chattanooga.
