Mississippi Braves News Release
PEARL, MS - The Mississippi Braves (17-17, 46-58) were edged out by the Mobile BayBears (14-20, 51-51) by a final score of 3-2 in Friday night's series finale rubber match at Trustmark Park. With their 3-2 victory over the M-Braves on Friday night, Mobile will depart from Pearl with a 3-2 series victory as well. Despite Friday night's narrow loss, M-Braves starting pitcher, Bruce Zimmermann recorded his fourth quality start of the season with the M-Braves. Zimmermann posted a final line of 7.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, and 1 HR. The left-hander also matched his season high for total innings pitched in a single game (7.0.)
Mobile gained an early advantage over Mississippi after taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning courtesy of a Zach Gibbons two-run home run that traveled deep beyond the left field wall.
The M-Braves earned their first run of the game in the bottom of the third inning when Alejandro Salazar grounded into a double play which allowed Brandon Downes to score.
Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning, M-Braves designated hitter, Luis Valenzuela tied the game 2-2 by delivering a two-out RBI line drive single to center field, scoring Travis Demeritte.
The game remained tied 2-2 until the top of the ninth inning when Sherman Johnson sent a screaming ground ball RBI single down the right field line, allowing Jose Rojas to score, giving the BayBears a 3-2 lead which would later prove to hold in the final frame of the contest, thus resulting in a 3-2 win for the BayBears.
Mobile relief pitcher, Zac Ryan (1-1, 5.17) earned the win while Mississippi relief pitcher, Corbin Clouse (4-2, 2.05) suffered the loss. Mobile's Dario Beltre was credited with a hold, his first with the BayBears in 2018 and closer, Matt Custred picked up his seventh save of the season.
The Mississippi Braves will return to Trustmark Park tomorrow night (Saturday, July 28th) for the second stint of their 10-game homestand as they host the Birmingham Barons for the first time this season. Atlanta Braves No. 14 overall prospect, Bryse Wilson (2-5, 4.13) will get the start for the M-Braves in the series opener. Wilson will square off against Barons southpaw, Tanner Banks (2-1, 2.70.)
Promotions for Saturday night's contest against Birmingham will include, Trustmark Super Sensational Saturday presented by Trustmark ($10,000 Dash for Cash and post-game fireworks), Scout Campout Night (local Boy and Girl Scout Troops are invited to campout on the outfield after the game! All groups must have been booked by July 20th to be qualified to campout on the field), and Team Baseball Card Giveaway (the first 1,500 fans will receive a 2018 M-Braves Team Baseball Card Set.)
