Maine Celtics News Release
PORTLAND, ME - The Maine Red Claws (1-1) took to the court tonight at the Portland Expo looking to exact revenge on the visiting Austin Toros (1-1) for spoiling their season two home opener the previous night. The Red Claws did not disappoint the packed house, taking the 93-88 win to split the two-game series.
The energy from the previous night's contest continued throughout the first quarter, as did the turnovers and steals. There were players all over the court scrambling for the ball early, stealing the ball, falling into the stands earning this win. The Red Claws entered the half with a 7-point lead over Austin, 49-42.
The second half, much like the first, was full of insistent efforts at both ends of the court. The two teams matched up well with eleven lead changes on the night. The Red Claws made the plays when it counted, with aggressive play in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
Red Claws guard Jamar Smith led all scorers with 25 points, 16 of them in the first half, while teammate Champ Oguchi added 21 points, including a key three-point play at the end of the fourth, for the first Maine win of the season.
Maine will renew a rivalry with the Springfield Armor next weekend, with back-to-back contests Friday night and Saturday afternoon in Springfield. Austin will also get back to action next weekend, hosting the defending champion Rio Grande Valley Vipers Saturday and Sunday.
