Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
LAREDO, TX - Brett Smith scored the overtime game-winning goal as the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs won their third straight game, 4-3 over the Laredo Bucks Friday night at the Laredo Entertainment Center.
The Mudbugs held third-period leads of 2-0 and 3-2, but the Bucks kept surging back to tie the game and eventually force overtime. Smith's OT winner was his third point of the night, adding to his two assists during regulation. Joe Ori was also great for the âBugs, notching two goals and one assist in the win.
The first period was scoreless, with neither team generating too many quality scoring chances. The teams traded unsuccessful powerplays in the first, and each had seven shots on goal.
The first half of the second period was much like the first, with shots on goal coming few and far between and scoring chances even more scarce. Finally the Mudbugs broke through with the game's first goal on their third powerplay of the night. Chris Brassard fired a sharp-angle shot from along the boards that appeared to be stopped by Sebastien Centomo, but trickled over the goal line to make it 1-0 for the âBugs on Brassard's ninth goal of the year. The Bucks thought they had tied the score a few minutes later on a rebound try in front of Ken Carroll when the red light went on and the horn sounded. Carroll had the puck in his glove the whole time though, making a great save to keep the Mudbugs on top.
Bossier-Shreveport quickly added to that lead in the third, getting Joe Ori's second goal of the year on the powerplay to make it 2-0. Laredo then scored two goals in less than a minute though to tie the contest up. Darryl Smith's powerplay goal and Matt Miller's even-strength tally made it a 2-2 game. Ori tipped in a Dave Pszenyczny wrist shot from the high slot to get his second of the night and retake the lead for the Mudbugs at 9:44. On another Bucks powerplay though, Adam Rivet backhanded a rebound past Carroll to once again tie the contest up at 3-3 and force the overtime session.
In the OT, Chris Brassard fed a long pass to Smith to lead him into the Laredo end. Smith, who was one-on-one with a Bucks' defenseman, cut to the slot and fired a wrist shot over Sebastien Centomo's glove hand at 3:46 to end the game and give the Mudbugs three straight wins for the first time since early November.
Ken Carroll had another busy night with 31 saves to win for the 10th time this year. Centomo stopped 15 shots in the loss as Bossier-Shreveport was outshot 34-19 in the contest. The Mudbugs and Bucks were both 2 for 5 on the powerplay.
