Shots from the Point

January 9, 2009 - Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release

1- The Colorado Eagles hit the midway point of their schedule on Wednesday night with a 3-1 victory in Rapid City. The win pushes the Eagles to 25-6-1 and to 51 points putting them on track for a 100-point season. The last CHL team to hit 100 points in the regular season was the 2003-04 Laredo Bucks notched 104 points. The Eagles are 12-3-1 at home and 13-3-0 on the road and half of their remaining 32 games are versus teams that are at or below .500. Colorado has been paced by strong goaltending namely from Andrew Penner who has not lost a game in regulation since November 1st at Mississippi. On the season, Penner is 17-1-1 with a 2.36 goals against average and a .927 save percentage.

2- The Texas Brahmas (22-9-3) have been on fire going 11-3-2 since early December and have firmly claimed their spot atop the Southeast Division with a six point lead over the second place Laredo Bucks. Texas has won six straight games overall and six straight road games (just one shy of the longest CHL road win streak this season). The Brahmas went 24-7-1 during the second half of the season a year ago and are already 2-0 during their second half this season. Jordan Cameron's 19 points (7-12=19) is pacing the Brahmas over the last two games followed by Grant Jacobsen's 14 points (7-7=14). Goaltender Brett Jaeger has won seven straight games allowing just 13 goals over that stretch. Texas should get only better when Friday night forward Travis Banga is in the line-up after being acquired from Rio Grande Valley. Banga, a two-time all-star, has scored 269 points (116-153=269) in 246 career CHL games.

3- The best team in the CHL currently is arguably the Rocky Mountain Rage. After a slow start (1-7-1 on November 8th), the Rage have rallied to get to 16-14-3 going 10-3-1 over their last 14 games. During their hot play, the Rage has allowed three or fewer goals in 10 of their last 14 games. Scott Reid is 8-1-1 in his last 10 games stopping close to 92% of the shots he has faced. David Morelli has been a pleasant surprise for Head Coach Tracy Egeland putting up five goals and 10 assists since December 1st (17 games) while recording a +9 plus/minus rating.
