Lincoln Saltdogs News Release

LINCOLN, NE - The Lincoln Saltdogs dropped the series opener against Shreveport Friday night, losing 7-1 to the Sports. Shreveport earned the big win in its first-ever trip to Haymarket Park.

Lincoln starter Jarrett Gardner (1-2) struck out the side in the first inning, but also gave up a run on a double and a single. The Sports then exploded for four runs in the second inning, highlighted by Deacon Burns' three-run home run. Shreveport tacked on single runs in both the third and fourth innings, and although Gardner would go on to retire the final six batters he faced, he still was saddled with his second loss of the season.

On the other hand, Shreveport starter Thad Markray (3-2) befuddled Lincoln hitters for most of the night. Markray pitched eight solid innings, scattering nine hits and two walks to pick up his third win of 2008. Lincoln didn't get a runner past second base until the eighth inning, when Dustin Yount doubled, then scored on Ross McCoy's RBI single.

McCoy, Anthony Contreras, Ben Tinius and Luis Perez all had two hits apiece for the Saltdogs, with Contreras extending his hitting streak to a league-best 18 games. Shawn McGill and Mario Delgado, however, saw their hitting streaks end at eight and seven games respectively. On the mound, Daryl Arreola pitched well in relief, allowing no runs and no hits in three innings while striking out three.

The Saltdogs and Sports play game two of their three-game series Saturday night at 7:05. Brian Campbell is scheduled to make the start for Lincoln, while Bert Snow is expected to start for Shreveport.
