Diablos falter against Cats

Lee Gwaltney threw seven solid innings as the Fort Worth Cats defeated the El Paso Diablos 4-1 in the series opener from LaGrave Field on Friday night.

The Fort Worth Cats got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning. Fort Worth led off the game with four consecutive singles, including RBI's by Jake Gautreau and Nelson Teilon for the 2-0 lead.

El Paso chipped away at the lead in the top of the second inning. Stantrel Smith legged out a fielder's choice with the bases loaded making it a 2-1 contest.

Fort Worth went to work in the bottom of the third inning. John Allen hammered an RBI double down the left field line for the 3-1 advantage. The Cats extended the lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the seventh. Nelson Teilon powered a solo-homerun over the left-center field wall off of Beau Hintz.

Lee Gwaltney (1-0) takes the win, he threw seven full allowing one run off of six hits with two walks and six strikeouts.

Beau Hintz (2-2) takes the loss, he lasted six and a third innings yielding four runs off of 12 hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

The Diablos will take on the Fort Worth Cats in the second game of their series, on Saturday night at 6:05 PM MST. Justin Knoff will throw for El Paso against Ryan Riddle for Fort Worth. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN Radio 1380 AM as well as at www.diablos.com with Jon Barr on the call.
