Sliders Steal Series in Extra Innings

July 20, 2009 - Frontier League (FL)
Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti News Release

Five Midwest Slider singles in the tenth inning scored five runs, as they beat the River City Rascals 12-8. River City tied the game in the bottom of the ninth, only to lose by four in extra innings.

The Rascals scored two runs in the first two innings, highlighted by a Jorge Gutierrez home run.

Jimmy Baker doubled and scored on a Gil Zayas double in the fourth. The Sliders scored three runs in the fifth from four singles; Baker hit a two-RBI single.

Gutierrez struck again with a two run single to put the Rascals in front 5-4.

The Sliders stole two runs off Rascal miscues in the seventh inning. Two walks scored without a hit, one on a groundout, and one on a wild pitch.

Up by two runs heading into the bottom of the ninth River City had their backs against the wall. They scored on a sacrifice fly, and down to their last batter a costly Slider error allowed the tying run to score.

The Sliders sprayed singles around the diamond to start extra innings. Five singles did all the damage needed in the tenth. Zack Pace, Roberto Mena, Clay McCord, Zayas, and Jonnie Knoble did their part hitting singles to give Arshwin Asjes run support.

Asjes allowed one run in the tenth but ultimately received the win pitching the final two innings. Kyle Kearcher made the start throwing five innings, allowing four runs, and struck out five.

With the victory the Sliders are one game below .500. They also beat 1st place River City five times in the six game season series.

Monday they will face the Gateway Grizzlies at 8:05 p.m. Gateway enters the game 20-29, and on a two game skid. The Sliders head back to town Thursday at EMU's Oestrike Stadium.
