Otters Lose Pitcher's Duel 1-0

July 20, 2009 - Frontier League (FL)
Evansville Otters News Release

Florence, KY - The Otters got a great effort from starting pitcher John Ducey, but it was not enough, as the Otters fell 1-0 to the Florence Freedom Monday at Champion Window Field.

Billy Mottram scored the only run of the game, and he earned it. Mottram singled to lead off the fourth inning, and then stole second and third. Mottram came around to score on Justin Pickett's sacrifice fly into right-center field.

The Otters' best scoring chance came in the ninth inning. Eric Blackwell led off with a single, and advanced to second on Javier Brown's sacrifice bunt. Blackwell tagged up and advanced to third on Frank Meade's deep fly ball to centerfield. Left hander Dustin Koca was intentionally walked, and pulled for pinch runner Jeremy Strack. With Cameron Satterwhite at the plate and two outs, Strack stole second base without a throw. With the game tying run at third and the go-ahead run at second, Satterwhite tried to check his swing on a 1-2 pitch. Home plate umpire Joe Harris ruled Satterwhite went around, ending the game.

John Ducey took his second complete game loss in his last three starts. Ducey went the distance July 2nd against River City, but was a 3-1 loser. Ducey allowed only one run on five hits Monday, dropping to 1-6 on the year.

Jonathan Miller pitched his first career complete game shutout for the Freedom. Miller (2-1), making only his third start of the year after being moved from the bullpen, struck out five and walked three.

The Otters (16-36) have lost four in a row. The three game series resumes Tuesday at 10:05am CDT.
