Grand Rapids Griffins News Release

Grand Rapids, MI- The Grand Rapids Griffins Youth Foundation and Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital will be hosting a Sled Hockey clinic on Saturday, September 27 from noon until 8 PM at Griff's Icehouse.

40 players and coaches from Pittsburgh, PA will spend the day instructing sled hockey coaches and players from around the region, including Youth Foundation players and coaches.

Sled hockey is a form of hockey designed for people with physical limitations. Players sit on aluminum sleds with skate-like blades on the underside of the sleds. Players propel themselves with two miniature sized hockey sticks with metal studs at one end to grab the ice and regular stick blades on the other end that can be used to control the puck. Players use all of the same equipment that traditional hockey players use, minus the skates. Although the participants may be limited physically, they are not limited in their desire to achieve success and have fun.

The clinic's first session begins at noon and ends at 4 PM. From 4-6 PM Sand Man's BBQ will provide dinner for the participants. The second and final session begins at 6 PM and ends at 8 PM.

This clinic is the kickoff for 2003-2004 Griffins Youth Foundation skating and hockey programming. All other programming begins the week of October 28 and continues through the end of February.
