Capitals Assign Eleven Players

PORTLAND, ME - The Washington Capitals, the National Hockey League affiliate of the Portland Pirates, today assigned eleven players from training camp as part of the team's second set of roster moves, Vice President and General Manager George McPhee announced. Seven of those players are expected to join the Pirates in time for the start of their training camp on Tuesday, September 23rd.

Forwards Mel Angelstad, Francois Methot, Graham Mink, Andrej Podkonicky and Jason Ulmer were assigned to the Pirates. Goaltenders Maxime Daigneault and Robert Gherson and forwards Eric Fehr and Derek Krestanovich were assigned to their respective junior teams. Forward Scott Pellerin and defenseman Mike Pudlick, who were free agent invitees, were released, but both are expected to attend Pirates' camp.

The Capitals' current training camp roster now stands at 35 players, including 19 forwards, 12 defensemen and four goaltenders. The Pirates expect to have twelve skaters and two goalies for the start of their camp. Additional players will join the team on Friday, September 26th with other assignments possible from Washington.

The Capitals continue their 2003 training camp, presented by World Wide Technology, with a three-game road trip over the weekend, playing the Detroit Red Wings in Detroit, the Philadelphia Flyers in London, Ontario, and the Pittsburgh Penguins in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. The game against the Penguins was moved from tonight to Sunday because of concerns over Hurricane Isabel. The Caps will kick off their 30th season by opening the 2003-04 regular season October 9th at MCI Center, facing the New York Islanders at 7:00 p.m.

The Caps will be in Portland on Saturday, September 27th to host the Penguins at the Cumberland County Civic Center. Game time is 7:00 p.m. Tickets are now on sale at the Civic Center box office and all Ticketmaster outlets. The Pirates begin the 2003-2004 American Hockey League season on Friday, October 10th when they visit the Lowell Lock Monsters at 7:00 p.m. The Pirates open the home half of their schedule on Friday, October 17th when they host the Hartford Wolf Pack at the Civic Center at 7:05 p.m. As part of Opening Night festivities, Rivalries, Margaritas and the Brian Boru will be hosting a pre-game block party from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. with drink specials, giveaways and mascot appearances. The Pirates will be back on Civic Center ice on Saturday, October 18th when they host the Monarchs at 7:05 p.m. The first 3,000 fans will receive a Pirates' magnetic schedule courtesy of Paul G.
