Slammers Win Big over Wild Things

Joliet, IL- Five Slammers have a multi-hit performance as Joliet (9-13) cruises to a 11-1 win over the Washington Wild Things (9-13) on Tuesday night.

The Wild Things scored first against pitcher Andrew Strenge. With two outs in the top of the first, LF CJ Beatty reached on 1B Hunter Ridge fielding error. 2B Sam Mende singled to move Beatty to third, and a bobbled ground ball by 3B Mike Garza allowed the baserunner to score, putting the Wild Things up 1-0 after the first.

Joliet came back with two runs in the third against lefty Tim Flight. LF JD Williams singled with one out. Two batters later, RF Phil Bates homered to left, his first long ball of the year, giving Joliet a 2-1 lead after three innings.

Behind a strong outing by pitcher Andrew Strenge, the offense built on that advantage. Ridge walked to lead off the fourth and moved to third on a C Jack Cleary double. With a pair in scoring position, Williams singled up the middle to drive in Cleary, giving the Slammers a 4-1 advantage.

The bottom of the order would come up big again for the Slammers in the sixth. Cleary doubled and 2B Max Casper drove him in with a triple to right. The Slammers led 5-1 after six.

After Strenge pitched six innings without allowing an earned run, reliever David Kubiak carried the torch in the seventh and eighth frames. He allowed just one hit in two innings before the Slammers added onto their lead in the eighth against Pat Butler.

With Garza on third and Rodriguez on second in the eighth inning, Cleary hit a bouncing ball up the middle for a single to plate two, putting Joliet up 7-1. With Cleary on first, Williams and White both walked to load the bases. Bates was hit by a pitch, scoring Cleary, before DH Russell Moldenhauer cracked a sharp ground ball through the right side of the infield, scoring Williams and giving the Slammers a 9-1 lead. Garza singled against new pitcher Joe Iorio to put Joliet up 11-1.

New pitcher Tyler Murphy tossed a scoreless ninth frame, capping off the Slammers 11-1 victory. Strenge (3-1) earned the victory and with his three hit day, Cleary is our M&M Bank Player of the Game. Joliet will be back in action on Wednesday night against the Wild Things ace Matt Sergery. First pitch is at 7:05 on http://www.ustream.tv/channel/slammervision.

Notes Max Casper's triple in the sixth inning was the first three-bagger for the Slammers this year...The Slammers scored their first five runs off extra-base hits...Andrew Strenge earned his team-leading third win...The Wild Things didn't have a multi-hit inning... The Slammers are now 7-7 when their opponent scores first...The Slammers pitching staff didn't allow an earned run for the first time this season...The home run in the third inning by Phil Bates was the first long ball for a Slammers player since Dante Rosenberg's homer against the Southern Illinois Miners on May 31st....Mike Garza had a multi-hit eighth inning.
