Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, Ill. (June 9, 2015) - The Southern Illinois Miners fell behind 1-0 in the fourth, but tied the game before taking the lead and then blowing out the Frontier Greys with nine unanswered runs in innings four through seven, beating the visitors 9-3 on Tuesday night at Rent One Park.
Rick Teasley (4-1) and Bobby Shore (1-3) engaged in a pitcher's duel in the first few innings, with neither team able to score until the fourth, when Zach Tanner hit a solo home run to left to make it 1-0 Greys. The home team would change that quickly, with Michael Earley doubling and moving to third on a Jerrud Sabourin single before scoring on a double-play ground ball.
In the fifth, after Wendell Fairley reached on an infield single, Steve Marino blasted a double to left-center to give the Miners a 2-1 lead. Then the Miners attacked Shore in the sixth and rallied for five runs to take control of the game. Earley led off with a triple and Sabourin walked. Frank Martinez then extended his personal hitting streak to 11 games with an RBI single to make it 3-1. After a passed ball, Niko Vasquez doubled to left to bring home both runners and chase Shore from the game. Against reliever Andrew Wellwerts, Vasquez scored when Fairley laid down a sacrifice and the new pitcher threw the ball away trying for the out at third base. A sacrifice fly by Aaron Gates later in the inning completed the scoring.
In the seventh, the Miners would get two more runs on a Vasquez RBI triple and a Marino RBI single to make it 9-1 before two Greys runs in the ninth provided the final margin. On the pitching side, Teasley mowed down the Greys all night long, allowing just the one run on three hits over seven innings, walking one and striking out a career-high 10 batters to get his fourth win of the season.
Marino led the charge offensively with a double among three hits in the contest and two RBIs, while Vasquez was among four other Miners with two hits each, adding three RBIs in addition to a double and a triple. Earley had a double and triple as well for Southern Illinois as the Miners improved to 15-7 overall.
They will go for the series win on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m., with Brandon Cowan on the hill against the Greys' Colin Feldtman.
