Joliet Slammers News Release

(Schaumburg, IL) - Hitting for the cycle is considered one of the more difficult things to do in baseball and Niko Vasquez did just that on Wednesday night in Schaumburg, IL, helping his Joliet Slammers (37-57) belt their way to victory over the Schaumburg Boomers (59-35) 9-4 at Boomer Stadium.

The Slammer shortstop is easily the M&M Bank Player of the game after he is the first Joliet Slammer in franchise history to hit for the cycle, going 4-5 at the plate and scoring three times with two runs batted home. The offense tallied 15 hits on the board and after winning tonight it will set up the 18th rubber match of the year in the final game of the season on Thursday.

Mike Barsotti (2-3) records the victory after tossing six innings and allowing only three earned runs on six hits. Adam Tollefson (3-1) picks up his first loss of the season after surrendering the Boomers one-run lead in the seventh by allowing Joliet to score three runs on four hits.

Schaumburg struck first in the bottom of the second inning, taking a 3-0 lead over Joliet. However, the Slammers immediately responded in the bottom of the third, scoring three runs to tie the game up and the scoring was highlighted by two doubles from Zak Colby and Niko Vasquez.

The Boomers took the lead back in the fifth at 4-3 and the Slammers grabbed the lead for good in the seventh scoring three more runs with Vasquez hitting a solo-homer and Akins crushing home run number 21 to left field.

Joliet added three more insurance runs in the ninth and it was the triple from Vasquez, which secured the cycle that highlighted the frame.

Chase Doremus (4-4, 2.59) will start in the final game of the year on Thursday from Schaumburg, IL. First pitch at Boomer Stadium comes at 6:30 and the Slammer pre game show hits the air on 1340 WJOL at 6:20 p.m.
