
Miners Defeated by Gateway

Marion, IL - The Miners were defeated by the Gateway Grizzlies on Wednesday evening at Rent One Park. Preston Vancil (9-6) received the loss as he pitched 5 1/3 innings and allowed four runs off four hits and three walks. He recorded three strikeouts in his final outing of the 2013 season. The Miners recorded twelve hits in the loss.
Ken Gregory got the Miners on the board first in the bottom of the first inning against Ja'Vaun West. With two outs, he hit a RBI double to score Steven Liddle and gave the Miners a 1-0 lead. Grizzlies short stop Michael Wing tied the game in the top of the fourth inning off Vancil as he hit a solo home run. Gateway scored two more runs off Vancil in the top of the fifth inning to take a 3-1 lead. The Grizzlies scored a run in the top of the sixth innning to extend their lead to 4-1.
The Grizzlies continued to score as they added another run in the top of the seventh inning off reliever Wes Alsup to take a 5-1 lead. They didn't stop as they scored two runs off reliever Nelson Curry to exend their lead to 7-1. Trevor Whyte hit his first homerun as a Miner as he hit a solo shot off Grizzlies reliever Logan Mahon in the bottom to cut the Grizzlies lead to 7-2.
The Miners finish the 2013 season on Thursday night against the Gateway Grizzlies in their series finale. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm. Fans can listen to the game beginning at 6:45 with the Heartland Regional Medical Center Pregame Show on the Miners Radio Network, southernillinoisminers.com and ustream.tv.
The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2012 Frontier League Champions and have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year three times since its inception. It has also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007.
