Joliet Slammers News Release

Schaumburg, IL- The Joliet Slammers (15-21) take advantage of some early defensive miscues by the Schaumburg Boomers (15-21) to win 6-4 and complete the three game sweep on Thursday night.

The Boomers scored first against new Slammers pitcher Michael Carden. 2B Jordan Dean led off with a walk and advanced to second on a 1B Craig Massey single. CF Alexi Colon singled to drive in Dean, putting the Boomers up 1-0.

The Slammers answered with a run in the second against pitcher Raul Jacobsen. DH Hunter Ridge led off with a double to left. LF Phil Bates moved him over with a single, putting runners at the corners. With RF Casey Fletcher up, Bates took off for second. The throw from Boomers catcher Michael Valadez ended up in centerfield, allowing Ridge to score. Bates would later on a fielding error by the 2B Jordan Dean, giving Joliet a 2-1 lead after the inning.

The Slammers added three runs in the third on a couple bizarre defensive plays by the Boomers. With one out CF Charlie White tripled. Roberts grounded to second. The second baseman Dean threw home, with the throw beating White. But White was able to slide around the tag to put the Slammers up 3-1. 3B Mike Garza doubled to move Roberts to third. He would score on a Hunter Ridge ground out to second. Garza came across on an error by the shortstop, extending the Slammers lead to 5-1 after the top half of the third inning.

The Slammers scored once more in the fifth. With Garza on second base and two outs, DH Hunter Ridge singled to drive in the Slammers third baseman. Joliet led 6-1 after the top of the fifth.

After a rocky first inning, Carden calmed down to toss four scoreless frames. The lefty was in a rhythm until the sixth inning. RF Garret Gordon led off with a single. The DH Sam Lind walked to put two on. LF Kyle Ruchim crushed a double to left field, scoring two and cutting the Slammers lead to 6-3. Kevin McNorton came on in relief to get the Slammers out of the bottom of the sixth.

The Boomers made one more push in the bottom of the ninth inning. With closer Navery Moore in, 1B Craig Massey singled. 3B Joel Hutter walked before Colon flew out to deep right. With two on and two outs, pinch hitter Mike Schulze worked a walk. DH Sam Lind walked as well, to score a run. Moore was pulled for fellow reliever Sam Moore, who got Ruchim to fly out with the bases loaded, ending the game. Carden (1-0) earned the win and Sam Moore picked up the save as the Slammers closed out the sweep.
