Lake Erie Crushers News Release

AVON, Ohio -The Lake Erie Crushers beat the Gateway Grizzlies on Thursday evening as the Crushers were able to score all three of their runs after the fifth inning and pick of their first series sweep of the season.

For the Crushers (14-19), the win is their fourth in a row. The loss for the Grizzlies (12-24) marks their fifth series in which they have been swept this season.

In the second inning, Gateway jumped on the board first, as Rolando Gomez led off the frame with a double. He moved over to third on an error committed by Cody Stevens and came around to score on a single by Ben Waldrip.

The Grizzlies were threatening again in the fifth inning as a one out walk and single put runners on first and second for Gateway. A wild pitch moved Garrett Vail to third and Cody Livesay to second. Crushers starter, Rob Blanc, was able to get out of the inning by retiring the next two Grizzlies hitters.

The Crushers took a lead in the sixth that they never gave back. Trevor Stevens walked to lead off the inning. He advanced to second on a groundout to third by Austin Prott. Stevens came around to score the first Crusher run off a double to right hit by Ty Nelson. Nelson would then move to third over on a single by Anderson Hidalgo. Jose Barraza then hit a fielder's choice that plated Nelson to give the Crushers the lead.

In the eighth inning, Lake Erie would add a run of insurance. Austin Prott doubled to lead off the inning. He would move over the third on a dropped third strike. The passed ball got away from Vail and allowed the batter, Nelson to reach first base safely. Hidalgo was hit by a pitch to load the bases. With two outs, Joey Burney hit a single to right that scored Nelson from third. Hidalgo was thrown out at home on the throw from right field to the plate as he tried to score from second on the single.

The Crushers offense came alive in this series as they outscored Gateway 18-2 and tallied 28 hits over the three games.

Blanc gave the Crushers another good outing, going five innings, allowing one run on three hits and striking out five Grizzlies hitters. Brad Duffy (4-1) worked a scoreless inning of relief in the sixth inning. Matt Brankle and Kolby Moore combined for one inning of relief as they finished out the seventh. Mike Devine pitched the eighth and Trevor Longfellow (6) closed the door on the Grizzlies hopes of a comeback in the ninth.

For the Grizzlies, starter Max Schonfeld (2-2) went seven strong innings allowing only two runs on six hits and one walk. Reliever Brett Zawacki pitched the eighth and allowed a run on two hits.

The Crushers begin another three game home series at All Pro Freight Stadium as they take on the Evansville Otters beginning on Friday night.
