
Slammers Rally Late But Lose a Heart-Breaker to the Grizzlies 5-4

Sauget, Il The Joliet Slammers thrilling comeback falls short to the Gateway Grizzlies 5-4 on Wednesday.
The Slammers (30-44) hit a pair of solo homers early and used a 2-run blast with two outs in the 9th to tie the game, but Joliet lost a tough one to Gateway (28-45) in game two of their three game set. Phil Bates now has a ten-game hitting streak for Joliet after a 3rd inning single. The Slammers picked up solo shots from Mike Garza and Marc Flores. Adam Giacalone allowed four runs over six innings. He struck out 7 and walked only one in the no-decision. Craig Massoni had a big hit for Gateway with a 2-run home run in the 5th inning. Dillon Haviland pitched well for the Grizzlies, allowing 2 runs on six hits over 7 innings. Trailing 4-2, Joliet's Hunter Ridge came on as a pinch-hitter with two outs in the top of the 9th and his two-run homer off of Tyler Thompson knotted the game at 4-4. David Kubiak went the final 2 2/3 innings for Joliet and suffered the tough luck loss as Cody Livesay's single in the bottom of the 9th scored the game-winner for Gateway. It was the only hit off Kubiak, as he struck out four and walked one. The series concludes Thursday night and then the Slammers take the long bus ride for a weekend series at Traverse City.
Joliet returns home on at 2-Dollar Tuesday August 18th at 7:05pm to open a three-game series against the Florence Freedom at 7:05pm. Wednesday the 19th features an appearance by the all-time hit king Pete Rose. He will put on a Slammers uniform to coach the bases for two innings and also sign autographs.
