Southern Illinois Miners News Release

Marion, Ill. (August 12, 2015) - The Southern Illinois Miners fell behind early as the Lake Erie Crushers took advantage of a couple of errors to score six runs in the first three innings, then blew the game open with a four-run fifth inning en route to a 12-3 win over the Miners on Wednesday night at Rent One Park, evening the midweek series at one game apiece.

Miners starter Brandon Cowan (1-2) worked through a scoreless first inning but Lake Erie got three unearned runs off of him in the second thanks to two errors by the Miners defensively in the frame. The Crushers were able to get three more runs across in the next inning, two of which on a two-run triple by Juan Sanchez as they led 6-0 after three innings.

With the Miners bullpen taxed from the night before when they combined for six and two-thirds innings of shutout relief, Cowan pitched through the fifth, but the Crushers were able to tack on four more runs in that inning, three on a home run by designated hitter Boo Vazquez, to take a 10-0 lead. Southern Illinois then bounced back and got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth.

After Adrian English led off with a single, Brian Portelli doubled him to third base two batters later. Jerrud Sabourin then drove both home with a double of his own down the left field line to make it 10-2, and Craig Massey also doubled down the line in left to bring home Sabourin on his first hit as a Miner and make it a 10-3 game.

The Miners would be held off the board the rest of the contest, however, and Lake Erie scored twice more in the ninth for the final margin. English, Portelli and Sabourin all had multi-hit performances, but it was not enough as the Crushers evened the series.

With the loss the Miners dropped back into a tie for first place in the overall league standings, and will face the Crushers on Thursday night in the rubber match of the series at 7:05 p.m. Miguel Ramirez will make the start for Southern Illinois.

The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2014 Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season.
