Joliet Slammers News Release

(Joliet, IL)- The Slammers got stuck with a discouraging 7-4 loss at Silver Cross Field to Southern Illinois on Thursday, dropping their second consecutive series.

Things started off well for Joliet, though. Jimmy Waters, continuing to prosper in the leadoff role, singled to lead off the bottom of the first and was brought around on a groundout from Hector Pellot. Abel Nieves reached on an error later on, and Josh Lyon singled him home to take a 2-0 lead after one. The Miners tied it up in the next half inning on a two-run homer by Sean Coughlin.

Southern Illinois pulled ahead in the fourth. With runners on the corners, Coughlin grounded into a double play, but managed to score Sean Harrell from third base. The Slammers, however, pulled even in the fifth on another RBI single from Lyon.

The Miners then scored four unanswered runs in later innings courtesy of hits from Ken Gregory, Elliot Hagburg and Coughlin. The Slammers pulled closer in the eighth on a sac fly by Waters to give the game its 7-4 final score.

Jake Renshaw threw a respectable five innings on four runs but was stuck with the loss, while Joliet piggybacked off four relief pitchers to finish the game.

The Slammers wrap up their series with the Miners at 7:05pm on Friday . If you can't make it to the game, fans can listen live on AM 1340 WJOL with Aaron Morse and Greg Talbott calling the action.
