Joliet Slammers News Release

JOLIET SLAMMERS (17-20) vs. SOUTHERN ILLINOIS MINERS (22-15)

Thursday, June 28 - 7:05 p.m. CT

Silver Cross Field - Joliet, IL

Game #38 - Home Game #20 (17-20), (8-11)

RHP #33 Jake Renshaw (1-1, 5.56 ERA) vs. RHP #18 Cody Hall (0-0, 1.80 ERA)

Last time out.

The Slammers dropped a high-scoring affair to the Southern Illinois Miners by a final score of 11-8 Wednesday night. Joliet scored four runs in the first inning to take a 4-2 lead but a Ken Gregory grand slam in the third inning put the Miners ahead for good. Steven Maxwell had an uncharacteristically rough outing as he lasted only four innings and gave up seven runs. Later in the game, it was the Slammers' defense that let them down as two errors in the eighth inning contributed to three Miners runs. For the Slammers it was their seventh loss in their last 10 games as they dropped into fifth place in the West Division. Joliet remained six games back of the Schaumburg Boomers. Abel Nieves had a big night for Joliet as he hit his third home run of the season, matching Erik Lis for the second most homers on the squad.

For Starters.

"Captain" Jake Renshaw is making his fourth start of the season tonight. Renshaw is coming off his first win of the season as he gutted out five innings in a 5-4 win over the Schaumburg Boomers on June 22. The right-handed pitcher developed a loyal following among the Slammers' faithful in 2011 as Joliet flew a pirate flag ever time he started at Silver Cross Field. The "Captain's" home starts featured pirate themed sound effects and video board slides every time he struck a hitter out. Renshaw won his final seven starts of the regular season, finishing with a Frontier League best 13 victories. He was also extremely consistent last year for Joliet, never lasting fewer than five innings in the regular season. Renshaw tallied four complete games on the season, tying for third most in the league. He was a workhorse, leading the Slammers with 128 innings pitched. Renshaw was a 10th round draft pick out of Ventura College by the Chicago Cubs in 2006. He was originally drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 26th round in 2004 but did not sign. Renshaw spent two years with the Cubs organization and pitched two years at the high-A level with the Orioles organization. The right-hander put up excellent numbers in 2010 in the Golden Baseball league as he posted a 2.39 ERA in 16 appearances.

Strong as a Fox.

David Fox made his return from the Disabled List yesterday in impressive fashion as he drove in three runs. It was his fifth multi-RBI game of the season, tied with Zach Mandelblatt for the most on the team.

Southern Illinois Miners coaching connections.

Slammers manager Bart Zeller and Slammers Bench Coach/VP of Baseball Operations Ron Biga both were coaches for the Miners as recently as 2010.

Walks and K's.

Slammers second baseman Hector Pellot leads the club in walks (24) and strike outs (27).

Playing from behind.

The opponent has scored first in 23 games against Joliet. The Slammers are 7-16 in those games.

Nieves means clutch.

Abel Nieves is hitting .478 in 23 AB with runners in scoring position.

Mandelblatt up and down.

Zach Mandelblatt leads the Slammers in HR with 4 and RBI with 23. But he is last on the team in batting average as he's only hitting .198 on the season

Error indicator.

The Slammers are 3-15 in games when they make an error. They are 14-5 in games when they do not.

Out-hit.

When the Slammers out-hit an opponent they are 14-4, but when the opponent out-hits the Slammers Joliet has a record of 2-16.
