Gateway Grizzlies News Release

FLORENCE, KY - John Shelby and Landon Hernandez combined for three home runs, but the Gateway Grizzlies comeback fell short in a 5-4 loss to the Florence Freedom Thursday night at the Home of the Freedom.

Florence jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first two innings and led the Grizzlies 5-1 after four, but Gateway wouldn't go down easily.

The Grizzlies scored three unanswered runs, including two home runs to bring the game within one run. Shelby hit two home runs, his first blast since June 9th. Meanwhile, Hernandez hit his second in as many games.

Gateway starting pitcher Ja'Vaun West (0-2) struggled in the loss. West allowed five runs on nine hits in four innings. The right-hander from Atlanta, MO struck out five while walking one.

Gateway relief pitchers continued to throw well, firing four scoreless innings. Logan Mahon worked two, Maurice Bankston pitched one and a third in his first appearance of the season after being signed on June 24 and Phillip Reamy retired both batters he faced.

The Grizzlies and Freedom play the rubber game of the series Friday night in Florence, KY. Right-hander Alex Kaminsky (5-2) makes the start for the Grizzlies. First pitch is set for 7:05 EST.
